Technica Corp. Opens Cyber Facility at Port San Antonio

San Antonio’s considerable cyber hub of specialized expertise has grown with the addition of a state-of-the-art cybersecurity facility from Technica Corporation. The Virginia-based company opened a 12,000-square-foot multi-functional cyber facility at Port San Antonio in June to support work on a $74 million Department of Defense contract Technica won in 2019.

Technica provides advanced cybersecurity engineering, cyber training, quality assurance and testing, and round-the-clock operational support for the U.S. Air Force’s Cyberspace Vulnerability Assessment/Hunter (CVA/H) weapon system.  CVA/H identifies vulnerabilities and performs risk assessments on mission-critical networks essential for national security. The customized cyber facilities at 913 Billy Mitchell Blvd. include a systems integration lab, training facility, help desk, servers and infrastructure, and secure storage.

The company has developed in-depth knowledge of cyber defense from operating some of the federal government’s largest networks. Founded in 1991, Technica provides high-end system engineering services to defense, intelligence, law enforcement, and federal civilian agencies.

“As San Antonio continues its trajectory as one of the world’s fastest-growing technology hubs—and with the burgeoning number of defense operations that depend on our expertise—it was imperative that we expand our presence into the Alamo City—home to one of America’s largest military and cybersecurity communities,” said Miguel Collado, president and chief executive officer (CEO) for Technica.

San Antonio is among the world’s top ten hubs for cybersecurity expertise. The city is home to the Air Force’s cyber command and its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance command, and the NSA’s Texas Cryptologic Center, located on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. With over 1,000 uniformed and civilian cybersecurity personnel working at the Port of San Antonio’s 1,900-acre campus, many companies work at the Port to be closer to government agencies.

Lockheed Martin, IPSecure, and CNF Technologies have also recently opened specialized cyber facilities to support Department of Defense customers with training and research and development of cybersecurity solutions.

“Our proximity to our defense client, our ability to tap into the talent pool of San Antonio’s large veteran community, and the strategic support provided by the Port and other industry partners in the region positions us very well to fulfill our mission as we continue to deliver leading innovative solutions,” Collado said.

According to the Defense Department’s contract website, the Technica contract is set until Feb. 14, 2021. Should the government exercise all contract options, Technica can expect to work on the contract until Aug. 14, 2025.

The company has 90 full-time employees in the San Antonio area and expects to increase that by another 30 for a total of 120 immediately, according to a Technica spokesperson. Technica has the following positions open in San Antonio:

  • Network and System Administrators
  • Network and System Engineers
  • Cyber Security Engineers
  • Software Architects
  • Training Specialists
  • Service Now Engineers
  • SAFe / Agile Scrum Masters & Coaches
  • Test Engineers

Plans call for hiring an additional 20-25 over the next 12 to 18 months to support all Technica’s client work in the San Antonio area, not just the CVA/H DANS program.

“In our increasingly connected world, we look forward to continuing our support of Technica’s team as they ensure the security of connections that are the foundation of our national defense systems,” said Port president and CEO Jim Perschbach.
