The RealCo long-term accelerator program added two more new companies to its portfolio last week: FastVisa and Totem. FastVisa is a legal technology software startup based in Dallas, TX. Co-founders Paul Kang and Ethan Jeong launched FastVisa in March 2016 after their first-hand experience with the issue they are solving. The duo first met as students attending the John Hopkins Carey Business School. HelpSocial Founder Matt Wilbanks Talks About Being Too Early and the Long Game

How do you know when it’s time to shut down your startup? HelpSocial chief executive officer Matt Wilbanks and chief technology officer Robert Collazo decided in late 2019 to close the company after six years of operations. The duo met while working at Rackspace. They developed a platform that collects social media comments into one dashboard to make it easier for companies to track and respond to customer service concerns. They launched their startup in 2014 to help enterprises address customer service issues on social media channels, selling its software to corporate call centers and other large businesses.  Over six years and six venture capital raises totaling $3.2 million, a business model pivot, and software as a service (Saas) platform redesign, the founders discovered t...

Easy Expunctions Shares Vision for Social Impact

Being the first founders to create a new kind of legal technology solution can be daunting. San Antonio-based startup Easy Expunctions launched its software solution in 2015 to help users identify and clear their criminal records for certain minor offenses. Four years later, Easy Expunctions still leads with its legal tech expunction service as the only affordable, automated online solution for about 77 million Americans, or 1 in 3 adults, who have a criminal record. People with criminal records often cannot get hired for jobs, especially for tasks requiring an occupational license. Legal fees starting at $1,500 for an expunction to permanently remove certain types of minor arrests from a person's public records can be out of reach for the people who could benefit the most. Founde...

Globally, wind and solar energy generation is expected to grow four to five times faster than every other source of power between now and 2050, this McKinsey study concluded. Fintech Startup FloatMe Closes $250,000 Pre-Seed Round

The San Antonio startup FloatMe is doing just that, having closed a $250,000 pre-seed funding round in December 2019 to help grow its micro-lending application. The Cleveland-based early-stage venture fund Comeback Capital led the round, with participation from San Francisco-based Right Side Capital Management, and local San Antonio investors. Co-founders Josh Sanchez and Ryan Cleary developed the FloatMe app in 2017 to enable workers to get a "float" or short-term advance on their next paycheck without paying hefty fees or interest.
