Clean Energy Generator and Two Biomedical Devices Declared Winners at UTSA CITE Competition

A clean energy generator, a video-aided laryngoscope, and a cooling prosthetic socket caught the attention of judges at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) venture competition Tuesday. EnVault, the student team that created a zero-emissions portable generator, won the top prize at UTSA's $100,000 Student Technology Venture Competition. UTSA's Center for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) hosts the annual competition to give students hands-on experience as early-stage entrepreneurs. Cliently Scores $1M Seed Round from Active Capital, Moves to San Antonio

One San Antonio-based venture capital firm is living up to its name, investing actively in promising business to business (B2B) software as a service (SaaS) startups which in this case, has lead to a promising company relocating to San Antonio. Cliently announced Tuesday its $1M million seed funding round led by Active Capital with participation from the Altair Capital Management company based in Tel Aviv, Israel. Leaptran, a San Antonio startup spun out of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), has garnered the international Smart 50 Award for its energy monitoring and control system for buildings. The Smart 50 Awards, in partnership with Smart Cities Connect (SCC), the Smart Cities Connect Foundation, and US Ignite, annually recognize the world’s top 50 most transformative smart cities projects each year. Newchip Launches Equity-Free Online Accelerator Program

Newchip, the Austin-based web and mobile investment platform that connects startups to investors, has launched a new accelerator program that does not require a share of a startup's equity to participate. This program is available for San Antonio-based entrepreneurs because participation in the accelerator is completely online. The program offers a ten-week curriculum with training, one-on-one mentor sessions, and live classes that help founders learn how to raise investment capital from angel investors, venture capitalists, and via crowdfunding. Participation typically takes about three to four hours each week with the rest of the program to be completed at the founder's pace.
